Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, is a procedure applied when the pulp is damaged beyond self-repair. The pulp is a soft layer consisting of a nerve and blood vessel bundle located in the innermost part of the tooth. Bacteria, often resulting from broken teeth or deep cavities, can lead to inflammation of the pulp. If the inflamed or damaged pulp is not removed, it can cause infection in the tooth and surrounding tissues, ultimately leading to tooth loss.

Why is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

Our teeth are living organs. Inside the protective enamel layer that we see, there is a network of nerves and blood vessels called "pulp." This living tissue of the tooth can be irreversibly damaged due to reasons such as decay, trauma, or gum diseases. In such cases, severe pain and inflammatory reactions are observed.

To alleviate this pain and restore the tooth to a healthy function, root canal treatment is performed. Tooth extraction is an option, but just as we consider the treatment of any injured organ first, if our dentist recommends it, we should consider treating our teeth. This is because, like decay, tooth loss is also a disease. If left untreated, it disrupts the balance of the entire mouth. A successful root canal treatment is a more convenient, quick, and accurate way to address tooth loss, both financially and emotionally.

How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

The first step is to administer local anesthesia to ensure a painless procedure.

Next, the decay is removed, and the inflamed pulp is extracted. All nerve and tissue remnants in the root canal are cleaned.

The canals are widened up to the root tip, and canal irrigation is performed with suitable solutions.

If it is a root canal treatment that will take multiple sessions, appropriate medications are applied to the canals to expedite healing, and temporary filling is placed between sessions.

Once healing is ensured, the canals are filled up to the root tip with a special filling material.

Does Root Canal Treatment Cause Pain?

Since local anesthesia is applied to the tooth undergoing root canal treatment, there is no sensation of pain.

How Long Does Root Canal Treatment Take?

This varies depending on the condition of the tooth. In some cases, a healthy filling can be done in a single session, while in others, multiple sessions may be required (until tissue healing is confirmed).

How Long Does a Tooth Treated with Root Canal Last?

After taking preventive measures to prevent the tooth from recurring and becoming infected, a tooth treated with root canal therapy can be used for a lifetime. Regular dental check-ups are essential during this period.
